Cultural and Linguistic Competency & Implicit Bias - Laws & Resources
Our expectation for the planners and faculty of Natividad's CME Activities is to comply with
California Laws AB 1195 and AB 241.
California Assembly Bill 1195 requires continuing medical education activities with patient cared components to include curriculum in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency. It is the intent of the bill, which went into effect July 1, 2006, to encourage physicians and surgeons, CME providers in the State of California to meet the cultural and linguistic concerns of a diverse patient population through appropriate professional development. The planners, speakers, and authors of CME activities are encouraged to address issues relevant in their topic area. In addition, a variety of resources are available that address cultural and linguistic competency, some of which are listed below.
California Assembly Bill 241 requires continuing medical education activities with patient cared components to include curriculum in the subjects of implicit bias. It is the intent of the bill, which will go into effect January 1, 2022, to encourage physicians and surgeons, CME providers in the State of California to address implicit bias, (meaning the attitudes or internalized stereotypes that affect our perceptions, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner, exists, and often contributes to unequal treatment of people based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, and other characteristics), through appropriate professional development. The planners, speakers, and authors of CME activities are encouraged to address issues relevant in their topic area. In addition, a variety of resources are available that address implicit bias, some of which are listed below.
